Shocks, struts, control arms, ball joints and bushings absorb every pothole and rough road a vehicle drives over. They wear gradually, which means many drivers do not notice the decline until a workshop points it out — but worn suspension affects handling, tyre wear and braking distance all at once.
Why it matters
Suspension components keep the tyres in contact with the road and the vehicle stable under braking and cornering. Worn parts increase stopping distances, accelerate uneven tyre wear, and make the vehicle noticeably harder to control on rough or wet roads.
When to replace
Shock absorbers and struts typically need replacing every 80,000 to 100,000 km, though rough roads and heavy loads shorten that. Ball joints and bushings are less predictable and are usually caught during a routine inspection or wheel alignment.
Signs you may need a replacement
- A bouncy or unsettled ride, especially after bumps
- Uneven or accelerated tyre wear on one side or edge
- Clunking or knocking noises over rough surfaces
- The vehicle pulling or drifting during normal driving
- Visible fluid leaking from a shock absorber
