Filters & Service

Oil, air, fuel and cabin filters are the parts most workshops replace at every service interval, and the ones most often forgotten between services. They are inexpensive individually, but a clogged filter can quietly cost a vehicle far more in fuel and engine wear than the part itself.

Why it matters

A restricted air or fuel filter forces the engine to work harder to draw in what it needs, which shows up as reduced power and worse fuel economy long before it causes a breakdown. A neglected oil filter is more serious — it can allow contaminated oil to circulate and accelerate engine wear.

When to replace

Oil filters are replaced at every oil change, typically every 10,000 to 15,000 km. Air and cabin filters generally need replacing every 15,000 to 20,000 km, sooner in dusty conditions. Fuel filters vary more by vehicle but are usually a 30,000 to 40,000 km interval.

Signs you may need a replacement

  • Reduced fuel economy or a noticeable drop in power
  • A musty smell from the vents
  • Engine hesitation or rough idling
  • Dark, gritty oil at a service check
  • Visible dirt or debris on the air filter element
