Timing belts, serpentine belts, fan belts and hoses are low-cost rubber components that keep an engine's systems synchronised and connected. They are some of the cheapest parts in the catalogue, and also some of the most consequential if they fail, particularly the timing belt.
Why it matters
On an interference engine, a snapped timing belt lets the pistons and valves collide, which can write off the engine entirely. Serpentine belts and hoses are less catastrophic individually, but a snapped serpentine belt can take out the alternator, power steering and cooling fan all at once.
When to replace
Timing belts are typically due every 60,000 to 100,000 km — this is one of the few genuinely fixed intervals in the catalogue and should not be pushed past the vehicle's specified figure. Serpentine belts and hoses are usually replaced when visible cracking, glazing or softening appears.
Signs you may need a replacement
- Visible cracking, fraying or glazing on a belt's surface
- A squealing noise from the engine bay, especially on startup
- A hose that feels soft, spongy or bulging under light pressure
- Coolant or oil residue near a hose connection
- A rattling or ticking noise that changes with engine speed
