Cooling
Radiators, water pumps, thermostats and cooling fans keep an engine running at a safe operating temperature. Overheating is one of the fastest ways to turn a minor issue into a written-off engine, which makes this one of the more urgent categories a workshop calls about.
Why it matters
An engine that overheats even once can warp a cylinder head or blow a head gasket within minutes. Cooling system parts are inexpensive relative to the engine damage they prevent — replacing a leaking radiator or a failed water pump early is always cheaper than the alternative.
When to replace
Thermostats and water pumps typically last 100,000 km or more but can fail without much warning. Radiators should be inspected whenever there is a coolant leak, visible corrosion, or the vehicle runs hotter than normal, especially in stop-start traffic or during a tow.
Signs you may need a replacement
- The temperature gauge sitting higher than usual, or reaching the red zone
- Coolant leaking under the vehicle or a sweet smell from the engine bay
- Steam or vapour coming from under the bonnet
- The heater blowing cool air instead of warm
- Visible white or green residue around hose connections
