Fluids & Consumables
Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid and grease are the parts every vehicle needs on a fixed schedule, regardless of make or model. They are the highest-frequency item in the catalogue and the easiest to fall behind on, since nothing visibly changes until the neglect starts causing damage.

Why it matters
Fluids do more than lubricate. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time and becomes less effective at high temperatures, coolant additives break down and stop protecting against corrosion, and old transmission fluid loses the friction properties a gearbox depends on. None of this shows up as a warning light until it is already causing wear.
When to replace
Engine oil is typically due every 10,000 to 15,000 km. Coolant and brake fluid are usually on a two-year or 40,000 km cycle regardless of how the vehicle is driven, since both degrade with time as well as distance. Transmission fluid intervals vary the most by vehicle and gearbox type.
Signs you may need a replacement
- Oil that looks dark and gritty rather than clear amber
- A spongy or less responsive brake pedal
- Coolant that looks rusty or has visible particles
- Gear changes that feel rough, delayed or hesitant
- Any fluid level warning light on the dashboard
