Engine

Pistons, cylinder heads, gaskets and spark plugs sit at the core of the engine, and problems here are usually the most expensive to leave unresolved. These are lower-turnover parts than brakes or filters, but when a workshop needs one, it needs it fast.

Why it matters

Internal engine components operate under extreme heat and pressure. A failed head gasket or worn piston ring does not just reduce performance — it can let coolant and oil mix, or let compression escape, turning a contained repair into a full rebuild if it is not caught early.

When to replace

Spark plugs are the routine item here, typically due every 30,000 to 60,000 km depending on plug type. Internal components such as pistons and cylinder heads are not scheduled maintenance items — they are replaced in response to a diagnosed fault, usually after a compression test or visible symptoms.

Signs you may need a replacement

  • Engine misfiring or rough running
  • White or blue smoke from the exhaust
  • Milky residue on the oil cap or dipstick
  • Unexplained loss of coolant with no visible external leak
  • A noticeable drop in engine power or compression
